Residency Training Program Overview

The residency training program continues to evolve and recreate itself in response to expansion needs and resident feedback.  An increase in the trainee numbers is providing a real opportunity to address the manpower shortage of obstetricians and gynaecologists within the province and across the country. With increased numbers comes a chance to re-evaluate current sites and look to our community partners in order to provide new and exciting opportunities for resident training.

Below is a brief description of the training you can expect each year in our program.

 

PGY-1

This year offers broad-based clinical training in all basic disciplines that is similar to a rotating internship and is completed outside the home program.  The PGY-1 year is completed at either the Royal Columbian Hospital (New Westminster), St. Paul's Hospital (Vancouver) or the Greater Victoria Hospital (Victoria) and consists of the following training:

  • 8 weeks of General Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • 8 weeks Internal Medicine
  • 4 weeks General Surgery
  • 4 weeks Surgery Selective
  • 4 weeks Pediatrics/Neonatology*
  • 4 weeks Psychiatry
  • 4 weeks I.C.U.
  • 4 weeks Emergency Medicine
  • 4 weeks Family Planning*
  • 4 weeks SRMC*
  • 4 weeks Elective

     * Please note: For residents assigned to Victoria, rotations will occur in Vancouver during the last 3 blocks of the academic year

PGY-2

The PGY-2 year is comprised of an entire academic year in General Obstetrics and Gynaecology at BC Women's Hospital, Vancouver General Hospital, St. Paul's Hospital and Royal Columbian Hospital.

 

PGY-3

The PGY-3 year consists of the following subspecialty training:

  • 12 weeks Maternal Fetal Medicine
  • 12 weeks Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility
  • 8 weeks Urogynaecology
  • 8 weeks Research
  • 4 weeks Obstetrical Ultrasound
  • 4 weeks Health Advocacy
  • 4 weeks Minimally Invasive Surgery

PGY-4

The PGY-4 year is highlighted with additional subspecialty training, community exposure and the beginning of chief residency:

  • 16 weeks Chief Resident (starting in Block 7 or 10)
  • 12 weeks Gynaecologic Oncology
  • 12 weeks Community Rotation in Kamloops, Prince George or Nanaimo
  • 8 weeks Elective
  • 4 weeks Research

PGY-5

The PGY-5 year consists of the following:

  • 24 weeks Chief Resident
  • 12 weeks Elective
  • 4 weeks O.R.
  • 4 weeks Pathology
  • 4 weeks Ambulatory Exposure
  • 4 weeks Senior Resident

 

Research

Resident involvement in research is a mandatory requirement of the program.  Each resident must complete a research project to manuscript form by the end of residency and present their project twice with at least one of those presentation at the Annual Departmental Academic Day.  Residents receive training in research design and are encouraged to present their projects at local, national, and international meetings and conferences.  The department Resident Research Advisory Group provides assistance and mentorship to the residents.  The group is chaired by Dr. Janice Kwon.
