The UBC Fellowship Program in Gynecologic Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility is a two-year subspecialty program, which has been fully accredited since 2001. Our current fellow is Dr. Saleh AlAsiri who is in his second year of training. At this time there is one Ministry of Health funded position. Dr. Niamh Tallon from Saskatchewan will begin her training in August 2011. Dr. Ghadeer Akbar will also be joining the program in July 2011.
This two-year fellowship program provides intensive subspecialty training for the tertiary care/ expert management of problems related to reproductive endocrinology and infertility. The primary focus in the first year remains the acquisition of core knowledge with clinical and surgical training. This includes consultation and management of referrals to various GREI clinics, participation in various ovulation induction regimens, learning the basic physics and techniques of ultrasounds as pertains to this subspecialty, learning ART procedures and infertility surgeries. Fellows are expected to initiate research project(s) quite early in their first year, with the expectation of completion and publication of their work by the end of the second year.
The second year builds on the first, further refining the fellow’s clinical, surgical, teaching and research skills. Fellows have primary responsibility in managing the Fellow’s Clinic, which is overseen by an attending staff (the degree of supervision is commensurate with the level of clinical knowledge and skill demonstrated by the trainee). During the second year, the fellow will also have an opportunity to participate in pediatric and adult medical endocrinology clinics.
Particular strengths of this GREI program include tubal microsurgery, ovulation induction techniques and monitoring, ART procedures, and gynecologic ultrasound. BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre is now the principal site for clinical and surgical training, following our move from Vancouver Hospital & Health Sciences Centre in March 2007.
In 2007 we participated the Royal College Accreditation Survey of our program, and are happy to report we are fully accredited.
